There are more than 100 HBCUs throughout the United states both private and public. Most of the institutions are four-year colleges or universities, but there are around 20 two-year institutions. These schools often have a lower cost, serve a more diverse group of students, and have faculties who place as much, or more, emphasis on teaching and student service oriented activities as on research. These schools have played a critical role in ensuring that African Americans receive a quality education.
