Gateway Sumer College Readiness Academy for 10th &11th Graders

Each year the UC Merced Gateway Scholars Program offers a College Readiness Academy for local high scholars entering 10th and 11th grades. This year’s Academy will be online and there is no fee to participate in the Academy. The Academy will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from June 22nd to July 29th. Scholars will attend via Zoom from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.   

There are two components to the Academy:
Pre-College Admission
  1. a-g requirements
  2. choosing a college or university (UC, CSU, Private, Community College)
  3. how to distinguish yourself on the college application
  4. navigating financial aid
  5. preparing to write the personal statement
Post College Admission
  1. financial management
  2. academic support services (EOP, EOP&S, advising, tutoring, mentoring, accessibility services, etc.)
  3. choosing a major
  4. learning effective study skills
  5. internships and research opportunities
  6. how to be extraordinary in the classroom
  7. summer transition programs (Summer Bridge, STEP, etc.)
  8. experiential opportunities (field research, study abroad, etc.)
  9. pursuing graduate (Masters and PhD) or professional school (Medicine, Law, MBA, etc.)
  10. life after college

Guest speakers include admissions officers from varied university systems, financial aid advisors, faculty, current undergraduates attending varied college or universities, and more. In addition, each scholar will have a Gateway mentor assigned to them. Mentors will meet with scholars to discuss what they have learned, to reply to a scholar’s questions, and to share their own personal educational migration story. Interested scholars can register using the QR code on the attached flyer.
